General Submissions

LISTEN is open to submissions year-round for online publishing only. To keep the online journal fresh with new content, we accept submissions with no specific theme. The mission of LISTEN is to be open to dialogue inspiring work. Engage us with your written conversations and words to engage in constructive dialogue. Additionally, what would the world be without the many sounds heard around the globe from city street to nature? If you can hear it, you can write about it, and we'll consider publishing your work.

Submissions and Guidelines

Send typed, unpublished material only (we consider work published online to be previously published). If work is submitted simultaneously, please let us know as soon as possible if it is accepted elsewhere. Include name and email address at the top of each file submitted.

Fiction: 50-5,000 words.
Poetry: Individual poems, up to 3 per file upload
Creative Nonfiction: Up to 5,000 words.
For fiction and creative nonfiction submissions, please provide a word count.
Other writing: Queries for submissions of work in other forms (i.e. comics, interviews, etc.) are welcome. You may submit such queries to the editor by email.
Visual work: Submit visual art, including photography as PDF, PNG, or JPG file type only. Only submit visual work once per quarter. File size must not exceed 10MB. Filename should be the title of your visual work.

Before Submitting
Please ensure that your work adheres to the following guidelines:
- Submissions must follow industry formatting standards: typed in 12 point, Times Roman, double-spaced for prose, free of typos. Pieces of work more than one page must be numbered.
- Title your work
- A brief third-person bio is requested.
- A headshot is requested, but optional.
- Writers must guarantee that their work is original, does not plagiarize or infringe the copyright of any other party, and does not breach any other law or ethical principle of publication (e.g. defamation, libel, obscenity).
Copyright remains with the authors; however, writers must give LISTEN exclusive publication rights for the work for three months from publication. Any further reproduction must publicly acknowledge LISTEN as the original publisher.
Compensation
At this time, we are a non-paying journal. Writers that have their work published will receive a link to their website and social media presences.

Response time is typically within four weeks.
